Keyboard Code 31

I'm running an older HP Pavilion with 2K. Everything was working great
until I plugged in a USB Microsoft optical mouse. Now I get a code 31 on my
keyboard. The keyboard is fine. I can go into my bios and everything types
fine. But once windows starts, it's all over with. I've tried removing
and reinstalling the drivers. I've even gone as far as to get a new USB
keyboard thinking maybe windows was currupted in the way it was seeing the
PS2 ports. It does the same to the new USB keyboard also. Only thing
that works great now is the USB mouse. I can't even get my old mouse to
work.

I'm trying seriously to avoid a re-image of this machine. Any ideas?

There's a chance this one might help.

There should be more descriptive text available in the Event Log
entry (which you can copy and paste) which may help to narrow down
the problem perhaps. Otherwise, no ideas other than checking for
Device Conflicts in Device Manager.
