Keyboard and mouse lock up.

When I first intalled XP-home, my keyboard and mouse wouldn't respond. I had to simply power off my computer, and when it rebooted they were restored. Just tonight, a friend called and said he had just intalled XP-Pro and lost his mouse and keyboard. I related my experience, and he said he already tried that but to no avail. Any help out there ? Thanks
 
If his Mouse and Keyboard are USB, he may have to reinstall the XP usb
drivers. Depending on his Motherboard and
Chipset.
