On my laptop there are red characters on the keys that I never use.
Ocasionally I find the keyboard set to use these characters and I don't know
how I activated this or how to get back to the original settings. Please
help.

Didn't your laptop come with a manual?
Who is the manufacturer? Maybe someone could help if they knew what kind it
was.

This may happen because of various reasons.
Your laptop may be equipped with a program installed by your laptop's
manufacturer, enabling these keys with a preset key combination you may
have inadvertendly accessed.
Laptops often also have two keyboard layouts installed, switching between
these two usually happens by holding the Ctrl key, and then pressing the
Shift key once.
You can test this behaviour by typing in notepad to see if Ctrl+Shift
layout switching is enabled on your machine.

Also check with your laptop's manufacturer.
