I have purchased a Microsoft product, Windows Server 2003 to be exact, and
feering loss of the key on the cd sleeve recorded it digital on my pocket pc.
As expected I lost the sleeve, but the key I wrote down doesn't seem to
work.

What is the process to get a new key and who do I contact for the first step.

Thank you very much for your time and have a great day,

If your Win2k3 server is operational, try the Magic Jelly Bean Key
Finder:
http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

It should show you the installed key. The program will even let you
print it out.

Unfortunately it is not operational. In my zest to install its shiney new
250gb system drive I formated it....But alais shortly after I posted the
message I remember that I stuffed all my licenses in my vs.net box. Sorry
for wasting your time but I really appreciate the fast response.

You are not wasting my time; I enjoy my volunteer help here. If you have
lost your XP product Key, the best option is to call Microsoft. Call on
Microsoft Licensing Fulfillment Center Toll Free Number (800) 248-0655
Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Pacific time.

Contact Microsoft page
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=csscontactfind

I expect they'll want some sort of proof of purchase, but I really don't
know. It certainly can't hurt to call. If you are not in the United
States, then the Contact page should have phone numbers for your
country.

The Windows 25-character Product Key (required to perform the
installation) is stored on the CD packaging on a bright orange sticker
that says "Do not lose this number." It is not on the installation CD
in any way, shape, or form. If it was an OEM (factory installed)
license, it's stored on a label that the PC manufacturer affixed to
the exterior of the PC case, or on the bottom of a laptop.

To recover a lost Product Key:

If your system still runs, you should be able to use Belarc
Advisor from http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html to find the
Product Key. (If you have a factory-installed OEM license, and
haven't since reinstalled the OS, the revealed Product Key is probably
of the drive image used at the factory and not your specific Product
Key; therefore, it probably cannot be -- and definitely should not
be -- used for a re-installation.)

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;326246

If it was an OEM license, you should contact the computer's
manufacturer; although very few manufacturers/vendors keep records of
the Product Keys they've sold, it's worth a try before you have to buy
a new license.
