Many Thanks to all who responded. I have downloaded and installed AllChars.
It looks promising. Just have to figure out how to add characters to that
application. I am typing text for a booklet of instruction on how to play a
particular card game, so I need the need the club diamond heart & spade
symbol. Looks like should have mentioned this before. Again thanks. I
know I will get other uses out of AllChars from the characters included.

: I never use Character Map, so I can't help with your question. However
: you may be interested in doing what I do, and use a little freeware
: background program called AllChars. This lets me. in all applications,
: type many common special characters (many of these are used in other
: languages) by pressing the ctrl key followed by a two character
: mnemonic combination.
:
: For example, for ñ the two characters are ~ and n. For ç it's c and ,
: For ü it's u and "
