using AVG Free Edition, wondering if this is common? I did a Virus Scan and
one of the first items that pops up is kernel32.dll changed, the computer
seems to be working mostly.

Normal. At least it happens here. I have not noticed any subsequent
problem.

Hope this helps.

This message may or may not result from recent system updates. Kernel32.dll
will be replaced by the following security updates:

- KB935839
- KB917422

Search your drive/s for that file and make sure that the file properties
of all present copies show information about the Microsoft origin.

A message like that is normal only if changes really happened. And there
are just two reasons for any changes: System updates or Malware. In the
latter case, however, Malware does not replace the system file in the
%windir%\System32 folder - otherwise, Windows wouldn't start. If neither
case applies, this false message would be a good reason for me to change
the anti-virus installed. No matter if "normal" or not.
