Somebody here mentioned there are prewritten rules by someone else for Kerio
2.14 firewall. I have just downloaded this program and am considering
installing it on the recommendation of many on this forum.

I have done a search but been unable to find this site that has been
mentioned. Also are there any other recommendations as to how to setup this
program. I use W2K Pro and am on a cable modem. Up to now I have been
using ZoneAlarm or Sygate. I don't do any file sharing yet and am not into
spending a lot of time trying to tweak the firewall to make it work right.

Do you mean 2.1.5?

That's the version I use, and the default settings are fine.

It does ask (1 time only if you wish) for permission for each program you
use that connects to the Internet to do so. They are very easy to figure
out. Allow all generic host processes to connect, and make sure only
Internet-based programs are allowed to connect to the Internet unless it's a
trusted program.

I suggest using the default setting, which asks for permission for
each propgram that you have that wants to get and/or receive data
through your connection. That is, you give explicit permissions to
each program.

It's really easy. Reboot with Kerio loading at boot. Go through each
program that you have, start it, watch for Kerio to popup and ask you,
check the Set rule box and move on to the next program you have.

After doing all of your programs switch to silent, where Kerio doesn't
give you a popup. You'll probably get numerous attempts to connect
from the zombie Windows machines out there (those not patched and
infected). Be sure to deny these. Only give a rule for the program you
start.

I'd be pretty leery of running a pre-made config. It might have
something in it that allows something you don't want to allow. Your
best bet is to give only permissions for what you know that needs to
connect.

I'm dialup, but I don't think there is any real difference, other than
the fact you might need to be even more careful than me.

So Kerio is just as easy to configure as ZoneAlarm? I always understood
it's much more complicated.
Although, on my 512 MB system I can live with resource hog Zone Alarm.

I have 256 megs, 500 mhz. After ridding myself of ZAPro, which I
thought was great I'll never try it again after Kerio 2.1.5.

I wasn't really having resource problems before, but everything was
clunky. Now absolutely no resource problems and it's faster than I can
keep up with it <G>.

I tried the newer Kerio and promptly switched back. Hands down, Kerio
2.1.5 rocks!

Thanks a lot for the tip REM!
Kerio passed all firewall tests I could find and it boots one hell of a lot
faster than Zone Alarm.
