Kerio v4 I downloaded and installed today says that it will expire in 30 days?

The PL version is v 2.1.5.

It doesn't entirely expire. Some functionality is disabled but you can
still use most of it. It's fantastic. I'd be using it if it didn't
freeze on my machine for some reason.

Is that what makes it so fantastic... ;)

Yes, Sygate is very solid and bug free. Good one also...

Sygate is bug free except for the bug (oops, feature) which sets all
programs you authorize to also have server rights. :-(

It's actually time-limited Liteware/PROmotionware. Some of the features
that only remain available in the pro version expire in 30 days.
However, none of those features are really vital to the operation of the
firewall and (IMO) Kerio is the best firewall going, commercial or
otherwise.

I agree though, it isn't freeware really.

All you have to do is right click on the app in the Applications box and
untick "Act as server."

I guess this means that most software doesn't need server rights; which
ones do? Does instant messaging need server rights? what about p2p?
browsers?

The only programs that should be given server rights are programs you
want to listen for connections from other computers.
If you don't allow instant messaging server rights, you will be able
to send, but not receive messages.
Your browser makes the connection to another computer, so it doesn't
need server rights.

I would prefer to see it default to no server rights also, but it's not
a big deal. Just uncheck the box every time you authorize a new app.
Pretty easy...

Yawn. What a boring chore. :-)

Sygate pops up to ask if XXXX should go thru the firewall. You say
yes and check "remember answer" and then you have to gp to the system
tray icon and launch SYgate and get to the hopelessly small aperture
apps window and find the app and then, as you quite correctly say,
right click it and uncheck "server".

Boring! And unnecessary if the default was no server rights.
