One of the svchost-processes takes up 3 percent of the
total cpu-time and I am constantly receiving about 50
packets/sec from the LAN. Is it normal for Windows to act
like this? I'm regularly checking for spyware and
viruses, so could it be anything else? Do You know where
to see what the different services, svchost is
containing, take care of? How do I find and eventually
disable the services that causes the traffic?

Hope You can help with some answers:-)

what kind of lan hardware is it? if it's intel, try to install the
latest lan drivers. worked for me, i was receiving millions of packets
but only sending a few. after driver update, both are about the same
now. HTH

Type netstat -o and this will tell you the PID. Type tasklist for a list of PIDs (or look in Task Manager Processes tab). Also look at nbtstat -s. You may need to type this when the data is being set.
