Keeps a record of previously installed programs?

OK, I have a question on how XP tracks programs on the system. First
off I am cheap...ok...enough said...haha. I have run a demo program until
the time expired. I wanted to try it a bit longer before I shelled out cash
for it, but when I uninstalled it, then went to the website, downloaded a
new copy of the install program and installed it, it comes up immediately
that the trial period has expired. Where is it finding info to know that
the program was already on the system at one time? I had cleared the
recycle bin and temp files before re-installing.

Most likely, the control to stop the demo program from being
re-installed is designed and implemented by that program ... not Windows
XP. You could get help, I guess, from the supplier of that program, but
they are clearly more likely to want you to buy a copy. You could
search around in the registry, but you'd probably be guessing and that's
not wise.
