Using Outlook 2002 with OfficeXP Pro.
When I reply to an email in Folder ABC, where is the setting to
automatically keep the Reply in Folder ABC rather than having it
automatically saved in the Sent folder?

Hi Scot,
the replied mails are saving automatically in the SentItem Folder.
If not, please use the Rules Wizard to do so!

No, what I want them to do is this: If I've already had the email routed to
Folder ABC, I want my reply to remain in Folder ABC and not go into the Sent
Folder.

Thank you, Andreas. In OL2002, there are a few problems using Rules Wizard
to save an outgoing reply in the same folder where the reply began.

1. Rules Wizard offers one default option to the "Apply changes to this
folder: box. That default option is "Inbox", and there seems to be no way
of changing it. If we're being forced to use the Rules Wizard for this
function, then we should have the option of clicking the drop-down arrow to
choose any of the folders we've created to manage our email. Even if we
first choose our newly created folder labeled "John Doe" before using Rules
Wizard, the option still comes up as "Inbox," and "John Doe" is not offered
as an option.

2. Rules Wizard enables all mail sent to John Doe to be automatically saved
in the John Doe folder. Good idea, but a short-sighted and crippled idea.
What if the John Does folder were setup to hold business correspondence with
John Doe, but personal mail to John Doe is not to be saved in that folder.
The Rules Wizard cannot differentiate between business and personal mail to
John Doe, meaning that it all has to be manually sorted anyway. In OL98, if
we chose to send personal email to John, we'd compose it in the general
Inbox so that it would be saved in the general Sent folder. In OL98,
outgoing mail was automatically saved in the folder it began -- period. No
Rules needed. Clean. Simple.

Can you clarify something about this for me? I have to assume that OL2002
is an impovement over OL98, so I have to assume that I'm missing something
about OL2002's function. Can you tell me what I'm not understanding about
OL2002?

Thanks,

In Outlook 2002:
If you keep email from John Doe in Folder ABC, and you want to automatically
keep copies of your replies to John Doe in Folder ABC, do this:

1. Tools | Options
2. In the Preferences tab choose E-mail Options | Advanced E-mail Options
3. Place a check in the box that reads: "In folders other than the Inbox,
save replies with original message."
4. Click OK

THIS IS THE RESULT::
If you have John Doe's incoming mail automatically routed to Folder ABC (a
folder you created to organize and manage your email), and you then reply to
John's email, a copy of your reply will be kept in Folder ABC and not in the
general Sent Items folder. This keeps all of your email concerning John Doe
in one place. In this case, that place will be Folder ABC unless you later
drag all of it into another folder or delete it.

SUMMARY:
You do not have to create a rule using Rules Wizard for every single folder,
and evey single person you reply to, in order to keep your replies in
specific folders.
