keeping qtask out of startup

I like to keep the tray as clean as possible, so I don't even
want Quicktime installed. But everytime I accidentally go to a
site that wants it, qtask sticks itself into startup and I have
to disable it via msconfig again to keep it from loading. Is
there anyway to prevent it from getting in there?

Is there a qttask.exe shortcut in >>>

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
or
%allusersprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

or
C:\Documents and Settings\Your name here\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
or
%userprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Go to C:\Program Files\Quicktime or %programfiles%\Quicktime and rename
qttask.exe to qttask.exe.OLD

Why are you installing the POS if you don't want it?

Some of this does not apply if you have Windows XP SP2.

First. Make sure of these settings and nothing will install without you
clicking YES. (Except what may install as part of some other software.)
Don't click YES if you don't know/trust the source.

Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options | Advanced tab |
Make sure both of these are NOT checked.

Enable Install On Demand (Internet Explorer)
[[Specifies to automatically download and install Internet Explorer
components if a Web page needs them in order to display the page properly or
perform a particular task.]]

 Enable Install On Demand (Other)
[[Specifies to automatically download and install Web components if a Web
page needs them in order to display the page properly or perform a
particular task.]]

I've had this problem myself in the past. The solution is to go into the
Quicktime folder and delete the qtast.exe file itself. Problem solved.

Hello Crash7,

Use quicktime alternative,
or uncheck in settings show icon in systray
but qtime will never exit when it loads
then QuickTime Alternative is solution

Personally I would avoid Quicktime like the plague except that a lot of
websites choose to use it and they don't seem happy with "QuickTime
Alternative". Quicktime is like a nasty little virus - it puts itself
in the system tray whether you want it or not. And when you tell it not
to IT STILL DOES IT!!! How dare they? The solution (as someone above
has said) is to delete "qtask.exe". That sorts the nasty little program
out. Even then, EVERY time you run Quicktime for the first time that
session you have to go through the stupid nag screen asking you to "Go
Pro". This intrusive pushiness means I would never buy it, whereas most
non-pushy software I do end up buying because having got used to its
capabitilites I then decide to buy the full version. But I won't
succumb to this sort of bullying. If anyone can forward this letter to
Apple, please do so. They won't listen though because they seem to be
gits.

....a nasty "little" virus with a 15+MB footprint?

Nope, nothing like that there.

How 'bout I just delete that whole folder? Hmmm. You'd think
that would go away when you uninstall the thing. Guess not.

I'm not installing it. I uninstalled it. I'm trying to keep it
from sticking its worthless ass back in the tray everytime I
accidently open a page that wants Quicktime.

I'll try that, too. The (Other) one was checked.

Ok, this is really starting to tick me off now. I followed all
the recommendations in this thread and even blocked all
Quicktime references in ZoneAlarm. I also manually deleted the
Quicktime folder in Program files (already long since
uninstalled). But, sure enough, today I accidentally went to a
page that wanted Quicktime and everything was back. Qttask was
back in startup in msconfig and that Quicktime folder was back
in Program files!

From my second post...

I would like to try one.
