When I try to run an old database application, it complains that a 32-
bit or 64-bit version is needed and directs me to contact the
developer. The developer is nowhere to be found. But because the
database works on Win2KSP4, I am hoping someone can suggest a software
"shim" to make it work on Win7x64. Can you help? TIA.

Sounds like it must be a 16-bit application. Try DOSBox, Microsoft's
Virtual PC, VMWare or some other virtual machine. Of course, all of
these except DOSBox will require you to install Windows within the
virtual machine... Another possibility is "XP Mode" for Windows 7,
but I don't know whether it provides a 32-bit or 64-bit environment
when used under Windows 7 64-bit.

You did not say what version of Windows you run. If it is Windows 7
Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate then you can download and install the
Windows XP Mode facility
(http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx).
