Keeping Computer Clean

06/06/04 3:10 PM

I am trying to keep my computer clean. The problem: there are about 30
viruses and worms the Trend Micro scan found (I have Norton Antivirus
2003, but I use another scanner to check NAV occasionally), but the
files don't seem to be on my computer even though the scan "says"
they're in the C:/_Restore/Temp folder. (I list ALL of my files (w/
their extensions). I also checked with 2X-Explorer (a file manager
like Windows Explorer).

What would I do?

Thank you,

www.google.com (or 'groups.google.com'
for
'removing virus in windows restore folder'

Would help if you'd said which version of Windows .. at a guess, it's
WinME?

What was your first hint, the "C:/_restore" part? ;o)

Granted that you have so many viruses. Simple, Copy all your essential data
on a CD. Go and get it throughly scanned for viruses.

Also disconnect from the internet, format your hard drive, install a good
firewall program (Zone Alarm 4.5 etc..), then install Windows again, goto
the update site and patch your system with the CRITICAL PATCHES, (you can
also order the cd for free from Microsoft).

Also get yourself a good virus scanner. I'm using AVG Grisoft. .

Perhaps a bit rough & tough... If you prefer to clean it without
reformatting... try some trustworthy tools:

Just one thing,.. are you really sure that you picked up so many
virusses? Write the Guinnes book ;-)

What's "essential data?"

Over the past almost four years, I've downloaded many programs. I
don't remember the titles of many so it would be difficult to
uninstall the OS.

I've used some sort of anti-virus program for many years. I started
using Norton AV 2003 last year (obviously <g>) 'cause I wanted to
"see" why it is the most popular AV program. All or most of my
computer problems occurred while NAV was installed and running.

I now use AVG 7.

The stuff that you absolutely have to have to stay in business - data
you've entered manually, programs you run every day, and don't have on
'retail CD' (i.e downloads).

If your PC burned to the ground tomorrow, what would you want back from
your backups?
