I've seen the "Shockwave Flash" component. However, Flash gets update an
aweful lot, so how do we keep up to date? Make a new component every time
there is a new release?

The first and quick answer - Yes.
The story there is similar to what you've got with any other components in the database provided by Microsoft. If an update is
available (QFE or WU) you, as the XPe image developer, is responsible for componentizing the update and deploying it to the devices.
Not really making out a new component but rather create your own update supported by the devices you deployed using technologies you
built-in there - DUA, SMS, SUS, entire image update, etc.

Actually Flash (as well as Shockwave Director) has its own auto-update mechanism built-in the control. On XP it works the way that
when launched the control makes a query to a hardcoded Url and if an update is available there it will prompt end user to accept or
decline the upgrade.

I never tested that feature on XPe. So I don't know if the Flash component provided by Microsoft supports that functionality.
Obviously to even test this functionality you need to build a device that at least includes full IE stack and going to have an
access to Internet.
