Hello,

Win2k Terminal Server, SP3

I had problems with VPN-users that used RDP-Sessions. In KB 120642 I found
some settings that improved the connection, however, I do not know if these
settings are really good, fit together, maybe they are to extreme to one or
the other direction. So, I made the following settings:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCPIP\Parameters (all values in
decimal):

- KeepAliveInterval 1000 milliseconds
- KeepAliveTime 120,000 milliseconds (2 minutes)
- TCPMaxDataRetransmissions 10 (repeat 10 times)

There is another setting that could help but I do not where to set, it is
called "UDP-Aging" (set to 3600 seconds?).

Pls. let me know what you think about the settings that I made.

Thank you

Hello Rakesh,

first of all: Before I made the settings mentioned, the RDP-sessions ended
after 1min to 20min all of a sudden. (Event 20048 on the server). With my
KeepAlive-settings I had one session opened for 6 hours (and I did not do
anything exept moving the mouse maybe once an hour).
Are you trying to keep the session alive for a longer time so that RDP user
sessions for VPN clients don't get terminated when the connection drops?
No, I want that my sessions to not disconnect at all (I cannot work when I
get disconnected every minute!)
Terminal services doen't use the TCP/IP keepalive mechanism. TS keepalives
are described in this KB article:
Strange, but the behaviour changed a lot.
This is not my problem.

My problem is that I have a VPN connection to my Terminal/RAS/VPN-Server
(all in one machine). When I start a RDP-Session with VPN then the
RDP-connection gets disconnected within a minute. This does not happen if I
permanently send pings to the server _within_ the RDP-session. This does not
happen when I make the KeepAlive-settings that I mentioned (without the
pings).

I do not have a problem with reconnecting if a session gets disconnected.

I did not mention Event 20048, ppp.log and terminate request etc. in this
thread because I alread send this question to nearly all routing_ras,
terminal-server-apps and clients- newsgroups in english and german and did
not get _one_ answer. But I found something about KeepAlive and I entered
some _best_guess_ values. This is why I started this thread.

So, what do you think about my KeepAlive-settings?

Best regards

arno
