IE6 would randomly close and links would not open OE6. Someone in the OE6
newsgroup mentioned KBA 306089. I added the String Value, DllPath, and the
path to MSOE.DLL in the referenced the registry key. Now all links to OE
work. OE is called up and ready to send a message with the file attached.
Also, IE6 does not shutdown.

I tried to find this article and also searched the OE
newsgroup but had no luck. Are you sure this was the
article?

Thanks,
Dave

See my post in your thread, Dave H. I think you'll find Q306098 won't help
(others have tried it) but I'd be pleased to hear using it was successful
for you. Reply to that thread, please.

PA Bear,

Maybe KBA 306098 will not fix Dave H's problem but it fixed two of my
problems:

1a. My Documents/right click a file/Send to/Mail Recipient. The MS Exchange
Wizard opens
1b. My Documents/My Pictures/select picture/click e-mail this file. The MS
Exchange Wizard opens.
1c. DIL9 or DIP9/select a picture/click send. The MS Exchange Wizard opens

These three aspects of the same problem were fixed. Then I found that a
second problem was also fixed.

2. IE6 would shutdown when I tried to open a site blocked by HOSTS so I
stopped using HOSTS. I tried HOSTS again after the registry fix and now,
IE6 does not shut down. Before you say that it was not the cause, I need to
say, I did not do anything else to my system before trying this.

Help was requested for both of these problems and only "look for spyware,
trojan, or ?" was the answer. I had used spybot, hijackthis, etc and stated
that in my posting. Then I was told to "live with it." Luckily, someone (I
do not know who but I wish to thank them) in the OE6 forum mentioned 306098
in a post to someone else. I tried it and the rest is history.

I understand that bad things exist and people should be warned about them
but others things like this registry problems exist also.

MS support who was trying to help me sent this after I told them that I had
fixed the problem:

"I would like to provide more information about the missing MSOE.DLL file.
Pictures and files can be sent to Outlook Express by "Sent to" when Outlook
Express was set to Default email client program. The registry path is the
key for this function. However, this registry key may be missing easily if
the Windows XP was upgraded from a previous Windows system or there are some
third party email client software was installed. There are also some unknown
factors beyond our visibility. However, Knowledge Base article 306098 is
always a solid solution to this issue."

Note: I did install Outlook 97 some months ago and then removed it. I
restored OE6 as the default email client and search the MVP sites for any
restore info. I do not remember seeing anything about this registry path
problem.

Understand that Dave H doesn't have your problems, Dave, but I'm happy to
hear Q306098 fixed yours. I replied to a post of yours about this in WinXP
General, giving you the fix: http://snurl.com/2k2v (I thought your email
addy looked familiar! <G>). The install of Outlook 97 is well-known to
"break" OE settings in the Registry.

I was also helping you in this thread a few weeks ago http://snurl.com/2k2t.
Mentioning 1a and 1b in this exchange, too, would have helped immensely.

As to #2, I can't believe Q306098 addressed this problem...but (not to
second guess you) I'd bet a very recent virus definitions update did!...

PA Bear,

Yes I did get your post but that was not the problem! I registered the
files but the problem was not fixed. Also, I did not have a virus and I
have not had Qhosts! My problems were fixed 9/17/03 with the registry
change. Spybot, highjackthis, and my AV never found a problem.

I did send back a post in the original thread about what I did but I do not
know if you saw it.

I do thank you and others for your help. You put in lots of hours helping
people and I see that you and others do help us with our computing
experience. Otherwise, I would not subscribe to these newsgroups.
Unfortunately by the time I post a problem, I have exhausted most other
avenues and the answer is not always easy or obvious.

David
