since Feb. I have been installing this update nightly because i don't know
how to stop it.I am totally ignorant of anything but simple instructions but
would appreciate any help in getting rid of this pest.

One of two of these steps will help you not seeing this Update again!

Open Windows Explorer then navigate to this directory:
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete this folder:
Download and SelUpdate

The second step is to pay a visit to Windows Updates site by running the
Windows Update from Start >> All Programs >> Windows Update ( it will be in
the top tree view).

Run the Custom Update instead of the Express one then locate this Update and
uncheck and also uncheck the sub check box to not show it again.
Reboot your machine and see if you will be represented gain with this update.
