KB938979 - Not Valid?

I even know the number off by heart...

"Problems and Solutions" (Sic) offered me this, so I went to MS and
downloaded it - and I did get the right version for my Vista HP laptop (32
bit, not 64 bit). But when I run it, it says it is "not valid" for my
system... since it's supposed to fix something, I guess I'd rather like to
have it!

Anyone else had this/know anything about it?

[MS Support took my enquiry re "Vista HP" and sent a load of XP info of no
use whatsoever (and gave a malformed response address...)]

Go to Windows Update, then on the left side pane click on installed
updates...chances are 979 is already installed...hence, the not valid
statement.

it's happened to me twice, it would be logical if the statement read
'already installed' instead...but this is Microsoft after all

Good thought, but no, it's not an already installed update (checked in
Windows Update and Installed Programs - both with Searches for "938" and
"979").

I didn't actually think to check first because I *assumed* (forgetting
momentarily that assuming is the mother of all FU's... though not in this
case!) Vista wouldn't suggest an update already installed...

Still waiting for a response from MS Support... assuming <g> that at least
one of the semi-guessed reply addresses was valid...

Will let you know what happens if I ever get to the bottom of it...

Problems & Solutions could be improved a bit... I can't find a way to see
what "Solutions" have been offered; resubmitting >240 problem reports tells
me of NEW solutions, but a previous suggestion I didn't act on seems
subsequently inaccessible...

Thanks for the input though,

I've had a reply frlom MS (well, two actually 0- the 1st one referred to
WinXP when I clearly said Vista HP, which inspired mountains of confidence)
which is basically to get rid of the old Software Distribution folder (after
turning off the update service... though unlike the sager advice here I was
actually advised to DELETE it rather than rename it, just in case)...

Doesn't make sense to me given that Reliability and Performance Pack
KB938979 does not seem to be a Windows Update - and I've checked it's not
installed (and it was the right 32-bit version), so fiddling with the update
system seems pointless...

....unless anyone here knows otherwise...

MS is sticking to a 24hour turnaround on all messages so it could take a
while to get an explanation of what they think...

OK Best summary...

Assuming that you have the correct 32/64 bit version for your OS, it is
probably already installed. Check "Installed Updates" (Control Panel -
Programs - View Installed Updates)

In the search box type KB938979... (by default, numeric substrings will not
match - which is why I didn't find it the first time. Use either a "full"
number or *(#substring)*)

If it appears in the results, it is indeed already installed: Problems and
Solutions continues to recommend updates etc. even if they are already (or
subsequently, but before you ask it for solutions) installed.

Don't bother checking with Windows Update and the Success/Failure status as
this is - MSFT's own statement! - not reliable (at least not perhaps until
the system is restarted... WU may say success but things may not make it
into the Registry, which presumably won't show up until much later...)

If KB938979 is NOT installed, you *can*...

Turn off the Windows Update Service; rename Windows\SoftwareDistribution to
e.g. SDTemp; restart Windows Update service... but you lose all your Windows
Update history (though it now seems of dubious value to me) and I cannot see
how that would resolve the problem... but if you don't mind losing the WU
history its worth a shot.

HTH...
