KB916281) IE6 on W98SE2

i have repeatedly failed to load this security update after upgrading to
IE6.. it downloads OK but i get the following msg when it tries to instal.
No Updates Were Installed

The following items failed to install. To try installing them again, click
Review and install updates, and then click Install Now again.

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB916281)


all other updates for 98SE2 are installed

any suggestions welcome

1. Try deleting your Temporary Internet Files (accept the option to delete
all offline content, too).

2. Temporarily disable your anti-virus application, any anti-spyware
applications & protections, and firewall before going to Windows Update. BE
CAREFUL! Don't do ANY other browsing, etc., while the machine's in this
state.

Are you certain, Roger? If that's true, you have no Cumulative Security
Updates for IE installed whatsoever. By any chance did you recently have
occasion to uninstall/reinstall/overinstall IE6? ...Win98?
 
YW. BROWSEUI.DLL v6.00.2800.1692 was included in 916281 so it installed
successfully.

Support for Win98 ended on 11 Jul-06 and no further security updates have
been or will be released for Win98 after that date. If Windows Update
doesn't offer you anything, the machine's as fully patched as it ever will
be.

Make sure you've re-enabled your anti-virus application and firewall.
