KB890859 breaks S3 standby timer

Installation of MS05-018 (KB 890859) broke the S3 Standby
(suspend-to-RAM) timer on my system running W2K SP4. After
installation of the hotfix, the timer under Control Panel -> Power
Options -> Power Schemes (tab), "System standby:" would work if set to
5 minutes or less. The timer failed if set to 10 minutes or longer.
The timers for "Turn off monitor:" and "Turn off hard disks:" seemed
to work normally. The system would still go into standby via Start,
Shut Down..., Stand by.

Event Viewer, as usual for power management (PM), showed nothing.

Uninstallation of the hotfix restored full standby timer
functionality. Reinstallation of the hotfix broke the timer again.

Since all hardware and software on my system is otherwise working
normally, I fully expect this problem to be observed elsewhere.

FWIW, I'm using an MSI 845E Max-L motherboard (MS-6566E) with AMI BIOS
at OEM version 6.0. Noteworthy for PM, an Adaptec 2940UW SCSI
controller is installed.

I hope MS will fix this bug and, more importantly, test PM
functionality before releasing future security hotfixes.

Unfortunately, MS's track record is beyond dismal -- it's calamitous.
I already reported this same problem after installing MS04-044 (KB
885835) and MS04-011 (KB 835732). 20 of the 26 files updated by
MS05-018 are common to MS04-044 and MS04-011.

My Usenet post for MS04-044 can be viewed here:
http://tinyurl.com/cmjte
My Usenet post for MS04-011 can be viewed here:
http://tinyurl.com/5brk2
I also reported the MS04-011 anomaly to MS Tech Support. The Microsoft
case number is SRX040507600406. AFAIK, there was never any followup.

Since the problem is identical in all three hotfixes, it's obvious
that MS is omitting a step in hotfix testing to check for power
management compatibility. It's also obvious that posting here and
reporting the problem to MS Tech Support will, most likely, *not*
result in a fix. This post is therefore for info only. :-(

Andrew,

I am looking at the case you were speaking of last, in which you said: "I also
reported the MS04-011 anomaly to MS Tech Support. The Microsoft case number is
SRX040507600406. (As far as I know), there was never any followup."

In the notes for that case, the technician wrote that the case was unresolved,
yet you were made aware of the resolution, agreed to close the case and agreed
with the resolution given, which was that KB835732 in your case was a BIOS
issue.

Is this not the case? If not, I apologize.

As for the current issue, KB890859 (MS05-018), I will look into reproducing this
issue and contacting the appropriate people. Before I do though, let me make
sure I understand:

If you install KB890859:
1. In Control Panel, then Power Options, then Power Schemes, and System Standby
WILL work if set to 5 minutes or less.
2. The timers for "Turn off monitor" and "Turn off hard disks" seem to work
normally.
3. The system still will go into standby manually -- that is, it will go into
standby normally if the user clicks Start, then Shutdown, then scrolls to
Standby
4. Event Viewer is no help.
5. Uninstalling this update results in everything working just fine.
6. The break is consistent, because reinstalling KB890859 causes the same
problem.
7. The hardware you have this installed on is as follows:
MSI 845E Max-L motherboard (MS-6566E)
---AMI BIOS (OEM version 6.0)
Adaptec 2940UW SCSI controller

Is MSI the OEM? Is this a major manufacturer or is this box from an outlet
where you buy the parts and assemble it yourself?

Please reply to this posting, and I'll be happy to take a look.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

Hi, Pat.
In the notes for that case, the technician wrote that the case was unresolved,
yet you were made aware of the resolution, agreed to close the case and agreed
with the resolution given, which was that KB835732 in your case was a BIOS
issue.

Is this not the case? If not, I apologize.

This is most definitely not the case. I never agreed to a resolution
and I most certainly never agreed that this was a BIOS issue, because
it isn't, since it's been confirmed by many other people using,
presumably, very different systems. Many have contacted me by e-mail.
Here's are links to several other reports, all relating to
MS04-011/KB835732, where the problem was first noticed:

If you install KB890859:
1. In Control Panel, then Power Options, then Power Schemes, and System Standby
WILL work if set to 5 minutes or less.

Correct. It will not work automatically if set to 10 minutes or
longer.
2. The timers for "Turn off monitor" and "Turn off hard disks" seem to work
normally.
Correct.

3. The system still will go into standby manually -- that is, it will go into
standby normally if the user clicks Start, then Shutdown, then scrolls to
Standby
Correct.

4. Event Viewer is no help.

Nothing about this problem ever appears in any log.
5. Uninstalling this update results in everything working just fine.

Correct. This was also the case for the other two hotfixes, MS04-011 &
MS04-044.
6. The break is consistent, because reinstalling KB890859 causes the same
problem.

Correct. There is no doubt about the cause-and-effect relationship.
7. The hardware you have this installed on is as follows:
MSI 845E Max-L motherboard (MS-6566E)
---AMI BIOS (OEM version 6.0)
Adaptec 2940UW SCSI controller

Correct. Other hardware configurations (motherboard BIOS versions 5.9
and 6.1; Adaptec 29160N SCSI card) have also been used and they are
reported in my Usenet posts. The results are always the same.
Is MSI the OEM?
Yes.

Is this a major manufacturer or is this box from an outlet
where you buy the parts and assemble it yourself?

MSI = MicroStar International, a major manufacturer. All parts were
selected, purchased and assembled by me.

The motherboard can be viewed here: http://tinyurl.com/5cn4t
Please reply to this posting, and I'll be happy to take a look.

Thanks for your interest. HTH.

Installlation of Update Rollup 1 (KB 891861) does _not_ break the S3
Standy (suspend-to-RAM) timer on my system running W2K SP4. After
installation of the hotfix, the timer under Control Panel -> Power
Options -> Power Schemes (tab), "System standby:" works for every time
period listed.

Update Rollup 1 thus *fixes* the problem introduced by MS04-011 (KB
835732) and perpetuated by MS04-044 (KB 885835) and MS05-018 (KB
890859). With those three hotfixes, the System standby timer did not
work if set to 10 minutes or longer.

Thanks, Microsoft, for fixing the problem.
