I downloaded 5 Critical Updates tonight and one of them was KB890830 which
stated that the size was 4.4MB (which would take 6 minutes). However, when
the downloads began, I noticed that the KB890830 downloaded but the size was
only 725KB. Could someone enlighten me as to why 4.4MB was quoted on the DL
page and yet only 725KB was downloaded?
Thank you.

Add-on post.
We are now really confused. We went back to Critical Updates and after we
clicked on it, it said it did not find anymore Critical Update downloads for
us.
HOWEVER, when we rant the "notepad %windir%\debug\mrt.log," we got message
saying: cannot find "winnit%\debug\mrt.log" even thought we were typing in
windir. We went to the mrt.exe and clicked on that and it found 'no
problems,' and a Mrt.Log was created.
Did MS do something wrong with this recent download for KB890830? As senior
citizens, we are quite confused and nervous about this problem. Can anyone
provide a definitive answer? Thank you.

This may not be as definitive as you desire, but, the size of the
updated tool may be dependent on prior updates ... in other words if
prior updates for MSRT were installed, then the total size of the update
would be smaller than if this was the first time the tool had been run.

I'm visiting Windows Update at the moment and will install the MSRT to
see what size is offered and what the actual download will be.
You are correct. The size of the update was 725 KB although it appeared
as a 4plus MB download.
Checking MRT.EXE, located in %windir%\system32 shows the size as 8.54
MB, so perhaps my "theory" is correct ? ;)

MowGreen - Thank you for your kind and informative answer. It did answer our
first question, but we wonder if you happened to see our 2nd (add-on) post?
Would you have an answer for that?
Thanks for your kind help and assistance.

There's nothing wrong with this month's release of the MRT that I've
seen ... yet.
Perhaps the syntax of the run command was not exact. When I ran it the
log opened as expected.
winnit%\debug\mrt.log

The above shows an " i" was added to the command.

Try this one, Alice - %windir%\debug\mrt.log
