Installed this baby on Saturday..Have had nothing but trouble since. I can't open links in my browser (example: to post on this board, I could not open with the post button at all, I'm using mozilla right now, links on mictrosoft website do not open, links on scripts that I have on my own servers do not open, etc..)
System is acting funky too..I ran spybot, adaware, nortons, trojan hunter, etc, etc..nothing suspicious..
I'd like to uninstall this mutha but cant find it in the add/remove programs..so I did a system restore to friday..still no good..It must have messed with deep system files somehow..any help?? Also did a sfc \scannow and it appeard to replace a lot of files but still did not help..
so,,any suggestions short of wiping this one out? Burns me cause this is a brand new install (just about 2 weeks old) Windows xp sp1

Sounds like my identical story. I too ran spybot, adaware, nortons, trojan
hunter, etc, etc.., tried XP's restore to no avail.

For me, the only thing that suceeded was using an image backup to recreate
the C partition. Luckily I had made one just before this "upgrade". At
least I found out my image backer (Acronis True Image 7) works flawlessly.

I read that someone was successful by uninstalling the upgrade in safe mode.
I did not try that. You could try and see.

Windows version?

Did you install MS04-025 via Windows Update? To assure a clean install,
your anti-virus application should be disabled and all other running
processes closed before installing anything, including Windows Updates.
Were they?

1. You click on a hyperlink in and an IE window doesn't even open:

2. You click on a hyperlink and an IE window opens but it doesn't load:

Windows version is at the bottom of my post, Windows xp
Pro sp1
was a clean install (all was closed) and done from windows
update
It's almost like something is preventing the windows from
opening when I click a url on the microsoft site, and
other sites it seems that it's some kinda of javascript
problem..also when I try to post say for example on tis
forum, nothing happens when I hit the post button..
I have already tried to reregister one dll but will try
again. it is very strange. and I can not uninstall this
update as it is not showing in add/remove programs
I really think something is terribly wrong with this update
and I really need some help

Is "Internet Explorer Q867801" listed in Add/Remove Programs?

Was your "security suite" (e.g., NIS) closed when you installed 867801?

Consider posting to this Windows Update-specific newsgroup (to which I'm
crossposting my reply):

Dear Amber,

I did not notice too many problems after kb867801 - only
lost my IE custom background colors... (but I saw that
immediately - and got rid of it, so maybe there were
others, but I didn't do enough other things to notice?)

but that was enuff! I un-stalled 867801, and got 'em back!

had not de-activated, turned-off, etc. any
firewall/antivirus/spywarekiller/popup-blocker/etc.-type
s/w when I installed, and never have seen any suggestion
from MS that it is necessary/prudent to do so...

if you want to try:

open windows explorer
clickon tools in toolbar
" folder options
" view
" option to enable viewing of hidden files/folders
after apply/ok, go back to explorer and "Search"
search for 867801
should get a "$ntuninstallkb867801$" folder (or whatever
the darn thing is called) highlighted in blue
(aside): HOW COULD MS CREATE AND DISPERSE THIS IMMENSELY
FAR-REACHING AND SERIOUS PROGRAM AND NOT! GIVE US THE
MEANS TO REMOVE IT VIA THE REMOVE PROGRAM UTILITY!!!
FREEKING IRRESPONSIBLE! (or just plain Stupid?)
anyway, open that $uninstall..$ folder
open the next folder that appears, has "uninst" in name
(I didn't write all of this down; wasted 1 or 2 hours on
Sunday...so I hope most of this IS correct!)
you should see an uninst"exe" and possibly uninst"bat" file
think I went with the bat file first, then the exe
anyway, as I recall things work pretty much by themselves
and the system reboots - minus this freekin "(_________)" -
fill-in with words/expletives of your choice...kb867801

Hope that helps...

Remove 867801 listed as Internet Explorer Q867801)
otherwise System Restore

Then use this rollup one from this link 871260

Browsing the My Documents folder on a network share with
Windows Explorer from a Windows XP-based computer takes
longer than expected

Disregard the "corporations" wording.
