kb840987 bluescreens machine

Anyone else having trouble with the latest round of patches? I stuffed the
last 4 in, rebooted to a blue screen/reboot cycle- sorry didn't stop to catch
the message. I uninstalled kb840987 and the machine is back up and running.
Before I test again I am wondering if anyone else has seen this?
 
Yes we had the same problem on our machine. It was an unexpected_
kernel_mode_trap with a stop error of 0x0000007F which the Microsoft Windows
2K Pro Resource Kit (Chap 33-Windows Stop Messages) describes as most
commonly a hardware failure and occasionally caused by software problems. In
this case we uninstalled the KB840987 Hotfix (under safe mode) and it was up
and running again. We also uninstalled all proceeding Hotfixes as a
precaution. But now we are left with vulnerability issues. So if anyone comes
up with a solution to this please post it here. I am with an IT department
with the US Military so I can imagine there will be lots of problems with
this because we run Win2K on most of our computers.
 
I reinstalled the patch and confirmed the "Unexpected Kernel Mode Trap"
error. I was successful installing this on another machine last night, and
am continuing the test process. I am running all other critical updates
successfully, so I am thinking that it is related only to this one patch.
(YMMV) I also looked at order of operations- installing kb840987 only after
installing the other critical updates but the result was the same.
I am going to continue testing, please post if you find anything out. Sucks
getting burned like this, I guess I have been fortunate since i haven't had a
patch problem since NT SP6 ;)

Yes we have the same problem it seems that the update kb840987 is
conflicting with the video drivers
 
Yes we have had the same thing at Emory University. All of the affected
machines are running Windows 2000, and are all Dell GX-150s. There is an
obvious driver conflict with 840987. From our initial assessment, it looks
as though the update is conflicting with the original Ultra ATA IDE
controller drivers that came with this model. Microsoft, you need to pull
this patch NOW and FIX IT.

I had the same issue with KB840987 on a Win2K server (Service Pack 4,
all other current patches).
The box is a Dell desktop (used as a testbed server), P3-1 GHz.
Startup goes almost all the way to the logon, then blue screens.

The BSOD message was STOP 0x0000007f UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP.
The first argument was "8" -- Web search suggests that is a "double
fault" error.

It will start in Safe Mode.
Bootlogging shows that ACPI, audio, video, and NIC drivers are not
loading.
The Event Viewer System Log showed a number of Service Control Manager
errors related to networking. The NIC is a 3Com 3C905C-TX.

Microsoft PortReporter is the only uncommon thing running as a
service. Symantec Corporate Edition 9.0.1 AntiVirus is also running.
Nothing unusual in the registry under "Run", nothing in
Programs/Startup.

Uninstalling the patch fixed the problem, re-installing brought it
back, uninstalling fixed it again.

Anyone else?
 
Here is what all of my machines have in common:

Dell GX-150s PIII 1.0GHz
Windows 2000 SP4
Symantec AV Corp. 9.0.1.1000

We are in the transition from SAV 8.1 to SAV 9. Our GX-150 W2K machines
that did not have a problem with the updates were still running version 8 of
SAV. Are we seeing a problem between update, chipset, and AV client?
 
Running Symantec Corporate Av 9 here. I have only seen this on one machine -
its a whitebox, P3-700/Intel 815 chipset.
None of my other machines have this problem so far but I still have many
more to test. The other machines have newer chisets, all have symantec 9.

Symantec AV is'nt relevant in this case.
At work I use Kaspersky AV, at home AVG 6.0 anti-virus system.
At work I had the same trouble with KB840987 (Ultra ATA IDE
controller driver).
At home no problems (other driver).
My English is very poor. You english-specialists, demand from MS a new
patch, please!!!

I have yet to see any official Microsoft release on why this is happening
(and a FIX FOR IT!). We have approximately 2,500 PCs here on campus and this
problem has happened to at least 50 Windows 2000 computers here. Most (if
not all) of them so far are Dell OptiPlex GX150 systems. Booting into safe
mode and uninstalling the patch works, but this is only temporary and very
time-consuming, so it obviously needs to be fixed ASAP.

We have found (on our affected machines) that the problem is in fact caused
by an Intel Ultra ATA driver. The resolution has been to boot into safe mode
and go through Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the Intel Ultra ATA Driver.
After that we reinstalled the patches (they had been previously uninstalled
to get the machines up and running) and there have been no problems since. I
think it would be very prudent for Microsoft to release an updated patch.
Personally, I was already annoyed at the number of security updates this
month. I'm a little more than annoyed now that I have spent more than a day
fixing problems that a patch created.
 
FYI -

This problem is resolved by booting into safe mode, uninstalling the Intel
Ultra Storage Driver, rebooting into normal mode, installing the Intel
Chipset Software Installation Utility (if not already installed), rebooting
once more, installing the Intel Application Accelerator, and rebooting once
more. This has been verified on several systems on our campus and has worked
on every one we have tried it on so far.

Video driver is not the problem I updated intel ata ide drivers and
the problem was fixed

Me too.

I can run task manager and access programs that way but the deesktop has
vanished.

How did you uninstall the update - I do not seem to be able to get into
Control Panel

I cannot find any warning on the Microsoft sites - this must surely have
been tested before making it available for sownload, or am I being naive?
 
Follow up....
I have tried booting up in safe mode but the desktop is still missing and so
I cannot get into control panel

I desperation I have inserted the W2000 CD and tried a repair,
This has eventually allowed me a normal desktop once again.

Let's see how long it takes for some recognition of the problem on the
update site!
 
Update on my problems with the blue screen problem...

I do not recommend the solution I took - various other parts of the system
are now not working.
It looks like a "re-install" for me.

Hope you others have better luck.
 
go to a command prompt.. from the task manager FILE --> RUN cmd

then type control

this will launch control panel.
 
NOT FOR ME ! saddely not.

I have an HP Omnibook xe3 and the above procedure did'nt work out.
I have no solution but uninstall this bloody patch...
