I cannot get this hotfix to work for the life of me.

I have a machine that has a base load of Windows 2000 Server on it (my test
box) with the 2.5 version of Mdac installed and Service Pack 4 and all
available hotfixes up to this point.

When I run Windows Update, this patch looks like it is installing, but when
I redetect the critical updates, it still tells me that I need to download
it and install it.

Conversely, I've downloaded the hotfix manually, and run the update (with no
command-line switches), and recieve the following error:

"An error occurred while setup was trying to verify the version of Microsoft
Data Access Components currently installed on the machine."

"Either the version currently installed does not match the version of this
hotfix package, or setup was unable to determine the version currently
installed."

here's the dahotfix.log file:

[21:43:10]: Executing PreInstallActions for package.
[21:43:10]: Loading function (CheckMDACVersionExact) from internal function
list.
[21:43:10]: 2.80,false[21:43:10]: Checking version of Microsoft Data Access
Components that is currently installed on the machine.
[21:43:10]: An error occurred while setup was trying to verify the version
of Microsoft Data Access Components current installed on the machine.
Either the version currently installed does not match the version of this
hotfix package, or setup was unable to determine the version currently
installed.
[21:43:10]: The action (NULL!CheckMDACVersionExact) returned FALSE.
Either all of the PreInstallActions for this package returned FALSE, or
there was a fatal error while executing an action.
The package will not be installed. This error will not halt the setup
process.
[21:43:10]: Destroying Job Queues.
[21:43:10]: Checking state of setup at end of installation.
Setup was NOT successful.
[21:43:10]: Shutting down Hotfix Installer.

I have updated the mdac version to 2.6, and I still get the same message,
and Windows Update still sees that my machine needs the update.

What the heck is going on? I can't possibly try and deploy this to my users
on my network...

Thanks for any help you can give me ...

I see the same problem here on a machine running Windows
2000 SP 4. It seems to install with no complaints, but
the Update agent finds the need for it again.

.

I have exactly the same problem. I also gave up with
windowsupdate via the web, and downloaded the update (mdac
update). This at least told me to go look at the log file
which then provided me with a reason as to why
windowsupdate kept telling me that I needed to reapply the
same update over and over again (how to keep a windows
user occupied). ...junk.

Yes, but if I have MDAC 2.6 SP1 (or any other non-applicable version
according to the documentation on this hotfix), why should my users and I be
prompted to download the same patch every day when the automatic updates
tell them to? Especially if they don't know that they need to update their
MDAC first and THEN run WU.

Just upgrading everyone to a later version of MDAC is not the answer - a few
of our apps have not been certified for use with 2.8 (only incarnations of
2.6).

I have heard in another thread that MS is looking into this issue.
