Every time I run chkdsk, more of these types of errors are found:

Cleaning up 928 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 928 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 928 unused security descriptors.

This Knowledge Base article seems to describe the problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831374/en-us
The article explains that this is a serious issue that needs to be
addressed, and says that CHKDSK is CORRUPTING the hard disk!

It provides a hot fix for Windows 2003 server, and alleges that XP gets
fixed with the latest service pack, but windows update does not solve my
problem!

How should I fix this serious problem?

Are you using chkdsk in read-only mode? This is a well-known anc very
common symptom of CHKDSK, it reports errors or deletes something if
it's read-only, you should run after next boot-up which is normal mode
of chkdsk.

Thansk for trying, but I don't think it's in read-only mode.
These disk checks were scheduled to run at boot time when they had full
access to the partitions.

If you think KB831374 applies is it on the basis of numbers of files or
the size of the MFT (Master File Table)? The chkdsk report gives the
number of files. You can ascertain the size of the MFT table by using
Disk Defragmenter, Analyse, View Report. The Master File details are at
the end of the Volume Information section and you need to scroll down to
see it. Details please.

What is the size of the disk / partition being checked? Are there any
other partitions on the disk.

Have you tried running Disk CleanUp to reduce file numbers on the drive
/ partition?

Hope this helps.

Good question Gerry!

Of my 4 partitions, none of them are remotely close to having more than
4,194,303 files or having a master file table that is larger than 4 gigabytes
(GB), so it appears my assumption of a connection to KB831374 was poorly
founded...

The problem is still present, but seeing as my message subject is now a
furfy, so I'll close this thread and repost under a different subject.

Thanks.

Hi Stephen,

Did you ever get this issue resolved? I ask because I have encountered the
same problem. Since my MFT is only 151 MB with 106,104 records, it doesn't
appear that the MS explanation of a MFT of 4 GB or 4,194,303 files as the
cause is correct. Furthermore, their proposed solution for Win XP (install
SP2) doesn't appear to correct the problem even though MS purports that it
does in the fix list for this SP.

Regards

Warren
