KB824141 - programs no longer run after installing patch

I installed KB824141 on my Windows 2000 Pro system today
(it is at SP3). After installation, several applications
failed. I subsequently removed the patch and things are
back to normal. Anyone else have this experience.

I had the same experience when I installed SP4 a month or
two ago. Several applications, including Winword.exe
stopped working --winword, for example, could not even
start; it would exit with an error message.

Any thoughts or work arounds?
 
Has the office programs the correct service pack? The last service pack for
Office 2000 is SP3 and for Office XP is SP2
