We are having a problem with Win2k once we install the
KB823980 patch. The problem is as follows: We installed
the patch then after a reboot and you log in only the
background comes up, no start bar, no icons, nothing. We
already spent 4 hrs on hold with Microsoft and now I'm
looking for some help from the community. Any suggestions
on how to fix this?

Hi Larry,

I got the exact same problem (see a few threads below).
Microsoft phone support seems unable to help.
If you want to temporarily cure the problem, boot in command mode and
replace the new files installed by the patch (ole32.dll, rpcrt4.dll and
rpcss.dll) by those the patch has put in the backup folder it has created
(in DOS it should be the $N46E4~1 (hidden) folder inside the WINNT folder).

We have been doing that, but now with the lovely Nachi
worm it is reapplying the patch which breaks the machines
again. Trying to find a fix to get the patch in and leave
it in.

Hope you can find a solution and post it!
Did you read thread "no Explorer on Win2000/WinME startup..." of August
