KB951748 does not play nice with Zone Alarm.
Result internet connection is lost. Temp fix disable Zone alarm or remove KB
951748.
Is it up to MS or ZA to fix this problem ? after all ZA is a very widely
used third party firewall.

ZA (in fact all 3rd party software f/w apps) is/are not worth having,
uninstall it! Use the in-build f/w version in conjunction with SecinfigXP.

I read that ZoneLabs and Microsoft are working together to find a solution.

A temporary circumvention is to lower the Internet Zone slider from High
to Medium.

I used system restore to undo patches to 7/08/08 and I am back online with
Zonealarm still running. Preemptive strikes are immoral.

i did not see this problem with AVG 8.0 with firewall

Lucky you :) But this doesn't mean anything.

Your understanding seems to be somwhat limited in relation to 3rd party f/w
applications; you're not the only one :)

Older ZoneAlarm like the classic 4.5.594
is not affected. Small, good, working.
