kaspersky opinions

i was going to buy kaspersky antivirus 6, but just wanted to know if i
should. i currently use avast as my main anti virus and avg with real
time deactivated, just for on-demand scanning.

is this enough?

does kaspersky slow down your pc like norton?

does the http traffic scanning of kaspersky slow down your internet
speed?

Look at the recent thread here on Free AV from AOL. The AVS product
is a reduced-feature KAV 6.

KAV 6 isn't bad in that regard, providing your machine isn't
antiquated. Kaspersky have taken measures to speed up
their v 6 scanners.

It shouldn't. The AVS product doesn't have that module, BTW.

I've been using KIS6 since May. KIS6 which is the full Internet
security product of which KAV6 is a subset. I can honestly say that I
have noticed no slow-down in my Pc since installing KIS6. I was
previously running Zonealarm Antivirus and I'd say that that product,
whilst not a resource hog (on my machine anyway) probably used more
resources than does Kaspersky, despite KIS's greater facilities. I also
think KIS6 (and in particular those parts of KIS which would be included
in KAV) is an excellent product well above the likes of Zonealarm,
Norton, Avast!, eTrust and AVG all of which I have used for significant
periods at some time or other. Of course it's not free but well worth
the money IMHO.
 
oh ok, thanks for your help, but do i need kaspersky, iv got avast and

the only thing good I have to say about it. The Kaspersky AntiVirus
6.0 package is buggy, has a tendency to conflict with other software,
and its Proactive Defense creates more problems than it solves.
There's no context-sensitive help. Many of the more complex functions
buried in settings dialogs aren't understandable. Of all the antivirus
products I've tested over the last year, it was the one I couldn't
wait to remove from my computers. Kaspersky 5.x might have been my
final choice in this evaluation. But it's no longer available from
Kaspersky.

I'd disagree with Mr. Scott on most of what he states. There were some
hotfixes to 6.0.0.299 and 6.0.0.300 that were problematic, but those
were discovered early on and easily resolved and version 6.0.0.303
doesn't have any of those same problems. As to conflicts, only Zone
Alarm and Norton AV/NIS come to mind, neither of which belong on a
machine with KAV installed.

Not quite right, optikl. Perfectly reasonable to have Zonealarm or
Norton firewall running if you have KAV as KAV only offers AV and other
facilities but not firewall. If you have KIS, then that would be different.

scannning engine but is free. Iv tried AOl active shield ( or watever
its called) but it doesn't let me install it cuz iv got avast. so does

Your best bet is to replace Avast with AVS but since you are obviously
not going to do that, I'll mention other alternatives. One is Antidote
SuperLite:

I don't like it because it's only updated weekly (the last I looked).
It also doesn't use the so-called "extra defs" (also the last time I
looked). It may not offer disinfection/deletion either. I don't
remember.

Another alternative is KAVDOSNT from my web site which uses
KAVDOS32. A third alternative is David's Multi-AV which he provides
links to practically every day. It also offers KAVDOS32 as well as
a few other command line av scanners.

I'm quite aware of what KAV offers. I own licenses. My statement has
nothing to do with what's an AV and what's a PFW.

You are right and I was not trying to discuss the differences between an
AV and a PFW and whether you knew the one from the other. Rather, I
think you've misinterpreted what I was saying. My point was that your
statement that Zonealarm does not "belong on a machine with KAV
installed" is slightly misleading as with KAV installed, one might well
want a personal firewall as well, and Zonealarm could be that firewall
(as could Norton firewall, I guess).

There are some other products that use the Kaspersky scanning engine,
but unsurprisingly they are not free. With CyberScrub AntiVirus (
http://www.tech-pro.net/cyberscrub-antivirus.html ) updates are free
for 5 years after the initial purchase. This product is basically the
old "Lite" version of KAV with a different interface, so it is also
less resource intensive and more suitable for older systems.

Having more than one AV installed and/or using the real-time
protection components of more than one AV simultaneously is almost
_never_ a good idea. If you wish to evaluate KAV, I strongly recommend
that you uninstall AVG and Avast. See this:

Actually, I doubt whether KAV 6 will work with the other two
installed. Not without conflicts (BSODs) anyway.

I can vouch for that:>)

This pgm does slow downloading of files when all functions are active.
I got about 1.5mbps on a 3.0mbps DSL line; 6 connections were being
monitored.
Closing all functions except AV file monitoring returned my d/l rate to
3.0, or so.
The web monitoring function works; went to Arts site and it alerted on
one of the files, forget which now:>)
I would definitely have all functions activated for web cruising.

That's the infamous false positive on my neutered froggie that KAV
produces :) Looks like they never did fix it, which I doubted they
would. KAV likes to alert on such files since they might wind up
as harmless crud in test beds used for testing av scanners. Not
that KAV has any corner in the crud detection dept. A number of
av products do the same kind of thing.

KAV does kill a lot of viruses, but sometimes it tries too hard, a lot
of anonymous proxy software is detected by KAV as Trojans, I know those
type of software are often bundled with spyware and Trojans, but in my
case, KAV seems to sit on the side of the government to eliminate the
software that can hide your identity on the internet.
