I've just been to their website to look at their anti-hacker software,
and they quote the price' for 1 year'. What exactly does this mean?
Does it mean after 1 year the software disables itself and you have to
re-purchase it?

You have to pay for another year of virus definitions updates.

Yes, except that paying for updating virus definitions has nothing to
do with purchasing firewalls, and the '1 year' description is shown
with their firewall offer, so I'm still none the wiser.

Similarities exist, especially if the firewall application is sniffing traffic and comparing
known attack patterns against the current traffic.

You are _not_ purchasing KAV, the Suite (KIS), or any other product.
You are purchasing a subscription. A 1-year subscription to the Suite
(KIS) would entitle you to any applicable database updates and all
product updates to KAV, KAH and KAS that are released during the next
year. After a year, you must renew in order to keep the databases and
products current.

BTW, I believe that you can still get an evaluation license for KIS
2006 Beta. When it comes out of Beta in a month or so, you would then
have to pay for it. You can get more info in the forum:

You must register in order to post ... it's free.

Yes.

After the subscription expires the software will be disabled. You
didn't mention this. It's not just the updates that cease... the
firewall ceases to function also. It will warn you that the license
has expuired and close.

cf ZoneAlarm's antispyware component

Thanks, Ian. I not only should have realized that, but mentioned it as
well. I have seen many people in the KL user fora have problems
installing KAV with an incorrect system clock. Not only will none of
the Kaspersky products work if the system clock is past the expiration
date of the license key, none of them will work of the system clock is
_incorrect_ period.

Thanks for answering the question AT LAST. It is rather tiresome how so
many people on this ng (and others) give out misleading or evasive
replies, or just plain false information. Now that we've arrived at the
real answer to my query, would you please expand on this one.

I was considering purchasing Kaspersky's anti-hacker software, but it
now seems a very expensive way to buy a firewall that has to be updated
each year. Is this the normal practice of security companies that sell
software firewalls? I'm aware about updating subscriptions to AV
providers. I know that ZoneAlarm provided a firewall on CD together
with modem drivers for a modem in an older machine I used to own.
Sadly I don't have the disk any longer.either.

Kaspersky AV and Firewall are included with System Mechanic 5 Pro. It is a
one year subscription, and while System mechanic is rather expensive take a
look on ebay. I myself got it from some English seller for a pittance of the
regular retail price. You might want to take a look at it as a possible way
around the expense. it is only the Pro edition that has Kaspersky. the
regular System Mechanic version does not.

Per Ian Kenefick:

Does it issue a warning in advance, or just leave the user out in the cold?

Mwav gave no warning. It died on 8 Feb after running it for 3 months.
I was real surprised and a little upset because I unistalled EZTrust
after the recent update debacle although I had six months left on my
subscription. Guess I'll have to re-install it.

I also recently uninstalled free AVG, Avast and AntiVir. Wasn't happy
with any of them. I'm getting by with F-Prot for DOS with its big-ass
updates.

I just re-installed a fresh copy of Mwav and it's working again. Guess
I'd better click on the buy Eset button before it quits again so I can
get some info to evaluate it against Kaspersky and NOD32.

I'll buy one of those three when my IRS check shows up. :-)

Hello (e-mail address removed),

Exactly. You are entitled to download virus definitions and program updates
for 1 year,
and after that you have to pay again to continue using it.
