K8V SE Deluxe What High Perf Mem Works?

I got a K8V SE Deluxe and had quite a time finding any memory that would
work at all. However, I would like to overclock the FSB and can't get
anywhere with the PC3200 Kingston parts. Has anyone gotten any PC3500 or
faster RAM to work with this card and gotten the FSB significantly higher
than 400 MHz. I have an XP 64 3000+ so it uses Unregistered parts. Video
is ATI Radeon 9800XT. Also, I heard if you stick in a third memory stick, it
won't work at all at 400 MHz, it will have to be set back to 333. Is that
true? Man, what a wierd board when it comes to memory, everything else is
great except the stupid location of the power connector, but that's minor.
The memory thing is bad though. I have tried Geil Platinum PC3500 and
Kingston HyperX PC4000 and neither one will even get it to POST. Also tried
severl different PC3200 from Micron and other and all fail POST. Only
thing I got to work was a Kingston PC3200 Value RAM that happened to have
Hynex chips on it that matched a part number in the manual. It seems to
work, although I cannot get Norton Ghost (from DOS) or PowerQuest's Drive
Image (from DOS) to work with it. I don't know if that is an issue with the
Athlon 64 or I still have memory issues running under DOS. Windows XP Pro
is up and running and so far is stable. I want a really fast Memory
stick so I can see how far this Athlon 64 3000+ will overclock.

Thanks - Paul

I am running a plain K8V with an AMD 64 3400.... am using Corsair
DDRAM 1GB TWINX1024-3200LLPRO COR,
seems to be running fine with that. As far as adding a stick to the
3rd slot, I tried that, and found out (much to my dismay) that the
systems ram speed did slow to a crawl, substantially ... (more like
to pc2100 speed rather than the claimed pc2700 speed) so, I yanked
it out.
or PowerQuest's Drive Image (from DOS) to work with it.
I don't know if that is an issue with the Athlon 64

I cannot use Drive Image 7, without getting a bunch of
Disk errors in Event Viewer ... but, I can use Drive Image 2002
but only if I boot it from floppy ... will not run from Windows.
From what I've read, we are not the only ones having disk imaging
problems. It's either this motherboard, or the AMD 64 cpu.

This is not an overclockers board. At least not yet. AFAIK there is
no AGP/PCI lock, so when you push the FSB, the AGP/PCI are increased
as well. It is also known, that the ATI 9800 doesn't like the AGP
bus overclocked, and the nominal 66MHz will only go to around 75MHz
before there is trouble. (This also corresponds to the practical limit
for PCI, which typically is around 37.5MHz.) So, until someone figures
out how to get around the lack of a lock, don't expect a big overclock.

The other issue is the memory bus. Memory is driven directly by the
processor and not the Northbridge. As you've noticed already, the
memory bus doesn't have the "legs" of a 875/865 chipset.

If any of your memory sticks are using Hynix chips, you might try
setting CAS to 2.5 instead of 2. Then, try overclocking.

HTH,
Paul

I have the same board, I stuck in the two of cheapest 512meg DDR3200
memory that Fry's electronics had, it works perfectly.
