K8V Problems

I'm back and I have the computer assembled.

Problem I'm having is that I can't get the bios to come up. My
monitor light just keeps flashing as though its in standby mode.

Computer turns on, fans all spin, HD spins, but nothing else. manual
says this Mobo is supposed to tell you if there is no CPU installed,
so I can t imagine that it cant tell me what my problem is. I get no
beeps or anything. Just everything spinning.

I reset the CMOS and the only things I have plugged in are the vid
card (Radeon 9600SE) and the HD (IBM Deskstar 40GB ATA100). The HD is
on IDE1, using the cable that came with the MObo.
And I'm using 1 Corsair CMX512C2PT DIMM. I also just put a brand new
power supply in the case, a Zalman 400w. i've heard problems where
this Mobo is picky with RAM, but shouldnt it atleast boot?

I removed and reinstalled both the RAM and Vid card. I also checked
all of my jumpers and everything appears to be connected right--but
would something like a HD LED prevent a bios from coming up?? Would
connecting the added USB and Firewire cards stop me?? I consider
these part of the Mobo install and not added compoents.

Problems I've had in the past (with other motherbards) involved metal
touching the Mobo and shorting it, but I couldnt even get the mother
to turn on in that instance, so I doubt thats my problem.

Bill if your concerned about it shorting then try running the mobo outside the
case on a static mat and see if there is any difference.

But from what your saying it sounds more like a monitor or vid card issue. See
if you can get your hands on a known good video card, even a pci card. That can
sometimes
be the eaisest fix.

Are there any error beeps coming on when it boots? If your not familer with
them then check out this site

they have a pretty good listing of them, if it doesnt come up just search for
POST error codes.

Also when in doubt try a little wiggle of the cords, be amazed at what that'll
fix ;)

I pulled the RAM out all together and now I hear the female voice
telling me there is problem with the RAM.
I put it back in and restarted the machine and it says "system failed
due to CPU overclocking"

Overclocking what? I havent even been able to get the BIOS up yet!!!!
 
Huh ok yeah I've seen other posts like this else where on these NG's in
reguards to this board. Do you have access to a known good system where you can
test the RAM? If so download Memtest 86+. Its a bootable floppy that can spot
problems without having to worry about windows fudging the results.
 
Here's where I stand--Mobo is out of the case sitting on its box on a
static bag.

I only have the RAM and the CPU installed. Still getting "System
failed due to CPU overclocking"

If I take the RAM out and try to boot it gives me the RAM error--if I
take the CPU out and try to boot it gives me some kind of CPU not
installed error.
With both in I get the above error.

I've also tried the RAM in all 3 slots and its only 1 DIMM. And I do
have both power connectors attached to the board.

Again, this is all without the video card.

Where should I start as far as RMA'ing? the way it looks, the return
dates will have passed by the time I hear from ASUS.

If it were the RAM, woudlnt I atleast be able to get into the BIOS?

And again, the PSU is a brand new Zalman 400w.

I should have stuck to my guns and bought the Abit board--been using
them my whole adult life with no problems--but this board looked so
sweeeeet :-(

No beeps, just the female voice taunting me. I don't have the PC
speaker connected--just the onboard sound.

Is that RAM really approved??? Can you borrow something on the
approved list and try that to see if it is a mobo issue or a dram
issue?

I've got an k8-se-deluxe and it boots and runs for hours as long as I
don't push the disk IO. If I copy one disk to another, it is only a
matter of a few minutes before I get a reboot. (This is under netbsd,
so it may well be a software issue.) The ethernet also goes deaf
after a few minutes. Grrr.

This is by far the most troublesome mobo I've ever tired to work with,
but then again I've never tried using a design this new.

The RAM issue Wolfgang mentioned may have something to do with it. I know mine
either didnt like the Mushkin I tried at first (highest ratted RAM on the net
at the time too) but it runs the approved Corsair ram like a champ. See if you
can bring it in to a local shop and have them run it though its paces for a
bit, if they have a walk up service available it may be worth while.

Also as for RMA, the manufactures warrenty should be good for at least a year,
and if its been under a month any repuatible vendor should allow for an RMA.
 
Unfortunatley, none of my frineds are computer geeks such as myself
and I dont have access to anything unless I buy it.

I'll have to see if I can track down some RAM from the ASUS list in my
area and I'll just run out and buy it.

Looking at the list--anything that is good for overclocking?

When I was dealing with the RAM problem with my board I ended up picking up
just some basic infinion based RAM. Was rock bottom basic stuff at PC3200, if
its cheap enough you may want to consider that just to see if its the RAM or
not.

As for overclockers RAM, OZ was supposed to make some great stuff but you its
doubt full its been tested on the board.
 
Not that anyone cares, but IT"S ALIVE!!!!

It was the Corsair RAM. I picked up (my wife rather, while I was at
work) a 512 DIMM of Kingston Hyper Memory and the computer posted.

A few BIOS problems to work out, but atleast I'm in.
