Here we go again.
New build and as far as it gets is the POST REPORTER giving the warning of "
Failed CPU Test."
I have about 10 years experience with building so I'm not a newbie.
I have an ANTEC TRUE 43O Watt Power Supply and all is connected properly.
The Athlon 64 is a retail unit with a larger heatsink and fan than OEM which
is plugged correctly into the cpu header on the motherboard.
I have some far-fetched ideas about the problem but before I start getting
into it I wanted to check here to see if anyone has run across this problem
Seems like I saw a POST about this a couple of weeks ago.
I cleared the CMOS by the book and nothing happens. There really isn't much
I can do if it won't post.
Manual says to "CALL ASUS SUPPORT" if this error is given after checking to
see that the CPU is installed properly.
Lord knows I don't wanna call ASUS Support.
Anybody run across this?

Have you checked to make sure no pins are bent on the CPU and that it is
securely seated in the socket? I know these sound lame, but you never know
what could have gone wrong. Also, what kind of memory config do you have?
Try it with only one stick if you have more, or move the sticks to different
slots. I would also suggest pulling all peripherals and drives and see if it
at least POSTs (i.e. leave only video card, CPU and RAM plugged in), make
sure ALL USB devices are also unplugged as they often cause boot failures.
Dunno what else it could be though...

Hi,

I would hazard a guess and say a dud CPU, that is unless your've tested the
CPU in another system. Something in your orginal post makes me think that
you have discounted the dead CPU theory though.

What model Athlon64 is it? I've seen some posts on MSI boards where the MSI
boards dont't/can't detect the Athlon64 3000 and 3400s. If you have one of
these other model CPUs perhaps that is the problem.

Craig

Yes to everything you mentioned.
Corsair XMS Memory which I tested in another machine and it is fine.
I RMA'd the board to NewEgg.

Butch

It is a retail version Athlon 64 3200+
I RMA'd the Board and I didn't have a way to check the processor.
That is possible but in all these years I have never gotten a bad CPU but I
know it can happen.
I don't understand your second part. Do you mean the MSI board can only
detect the 3000 and 3400?
I thought maybe it was a typo.
Somebody else had this same problem a few weeks ago and I can't run the POST
down.
The troubleshooting guide makes reference to calling ASUS if this error
message is received.
That makes me think that they have an issue with some boards and not others.
There could be a later board revision.
Could be a bad cpu like you mentioned.
If the next board fails then I'm RMA'ing the processor.

Yes, on the MSI forums there were a couple of people who had a engineering
sample 3400 but the bios didn't recognise it. I was thinking that perhaps
you have such a chip and that the current ASUS bios for this board may not
also support the 3400 yet. Sorry if I confused you.

I hope you get your system up and running soon.

I had the same problem with my first board and I thought it was the
processor but upon closer inspection I found a leaky capacitor right
next to the socket.

There's been quite a bit of problems with the early boards related to
bad capactors. Often the msg is the one you have listed. I'd call
Asus and ask for an RMA
