Hi;

I'm trying to install Windows XP Home SP2 on a bunch of PCs based on the
K8S-MX motherboard, each of which has a single 80GB Seagate S-ATA disk.

The OS installs fine with a P-ATA disk but, having installed the SiS
RAID S-ATA driver (F6, S & floppy disk...) the installation stops with :

*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xFA2F6524,0x0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)

I'm running the latest BOIS firmware from Asus (1015).

Any ideas ?

TIA

The error message is easy enough to look up, but doesn't suggest
a mechanism as to what is happening.

A clue is a BIOS option that seems to be new to SIS chipsets -
I haven't seen this in the BIOS descriptions of other SIS boards:

"Onboard PCI S-ATA Controller" [disabled, IDE by BIOS, RAID by ROM]

If you want to F6 in a RAID driver, I would want to change the
BIOS setting to [RAID by ROM]. If you don't really want
anything to do with RAID, I would leave the BIOS at the default
[IDE by BIOS], and then do not F6 anything for it during the
install. The "IDE by BIOS" option looks like it may be relying
on a Microsoft driver for vanilla SATA operation, in the same
sense that an Intel ICH5/ICH6/etc can get a driver from Windows
for running a SATA disk in Win2K/WinXP.

So, try not adding a driver via F6, and see if WinXP can install
anyway. Use the BIOS default [IDE by BIOS] when you try this.

You might also want to get a copy of Everest Home Edition
(lavalys.com) and see how the enumeration of the SATA ports
changes when that BIOS setting is changed. To experiment like
that, I would use one of your PATA disk based computers, bring
your copy of Everest, then try the various BIOS values and
see how the SATA enumerates - ex. PCI\VEN_1039&DEV_0182 should
be the RAID device enumeration.

Have you had a look on the Seagate web site for any test tools that
can be run from DOS?

I am about to run up an Hitachi 80GB SATA drive on an K8S-MX.
I have noticed that Hitachi have some test tools.

Thanks for the responses.

I'd performed a full memory check, tried a new version of the SATA RAID
driver hot from Asus in Beijing, run the Seagat diagnostics on the drive...

Replaced the USB CD-ROM with an IDE one, and everything worked fine.
