Can I set two IDE ports to RAID and install
a DVD writer and DVD player on the remaining
two ports? I know I can set it in the BIOS, but
has anyone tried this.

It'll be fine!

Not sure if it's best to separate the two hard drives onto separate channels
for performance.

If you do a lot of ripping and fast writing to CD/DVD then I would probably
say separate your hard drives from your CD drives in terms of channels.

Guess it's a trade-off.

24x is 24*150KB/s which is "only" 3.6MB/s, so the cache on the burner should
solve any issues, but you never know.

Thanks for the quick response. I know I can mix hard drives
and CD drive on normal IDE. Just wasn't sure about RAID
and CD drives. It hasn't worked when I've tried it before but
that was on a promise controller.
