Hi again,

I had the problem of going from SDRAM to DDR on my board which supports both
my last OP was 24/1.

I have been in contact with ECS and they have said clean DDR slots and
update to the latest bios, they gave me the link. And also use the memory
they have tested, which was low MB and about 4 makes? The Bios Name as
shown was
K7S5A(PCB:1.1) / K7S5A(PCB:3.1) /K7S5A(PCB:3.1B). I am a bit weary of
going onto link for bios in case anything goes wrong when downloading and I
loose all !! Any advice please

Loading new BIOS from a manufacturer should be a safe operation but yes,
errors can happen. And your board is likely to be toast. Back up
important stuff first, and have access to another internet connected PC
to resolve further issues.

Is this a hobby machine or business? If the latter, I'd strongly
recomend cutting losses and finding something else. Shouldn't be burning
company time on things like these in the current economic mess. ;-)

Yes it is home use only,it runs ok on 512mb SDRAM, but wonted that better
transfer time. I'm on XP Pro sp2 O/S

What transfer time are you trying to fix???

You should be OK :-)

Firstly, check the file they have given you a link and make sure it you
wave it past a virus scanner once you have it on your machine - I've
been downloading some driver files from far east websites and have
unfortunately found some infected. Would be interesting to check it's
version against the ones on http://www.lejabeach.com/ECS/ez.html

Read the install instructions carefully, and take heed that if creation
of a boot floppy is involved (if not written direct from a window
utility) - you first format it on the same drive that you will be
reading it on, and then throughly check the floppy making sure that
there no bad sectors. On this floppy you will also be creating a backup
of the current BIOS, so again be sure it's a good disk.

Also make sure there are no chances that power will be interrupted
during the flashing operation. Some motherboards have a BIOS recovery
method if things mess up. I'll cross fingers you won't need to go there.

Good luck :-)

I mean it will move the information twice as quick as the old SDRAM does, I
beleive boot up is quicker also.

Roger, this mobo I have used numerous times--gave me no unliveable
problems except on one machine using DDR. I changed it to SDRAM and had no
more problems. The big issue the boards all seemed to have was when
overclockers would lose their faster settings by it losing its bios
settings. They would automatically fall back to default settings. Luckily,
the ones I built were used by users who knew NOTHING about o'clocking.
To my knowledge, no one ever figured out its cure--not even Elite, the
mfg. And there were tons of them sold for using Athlon cpu's that could be
overclocked like crazy. There was even an aftermarket, custom bios made by
a freelancer that would reach bios-settings unreachable by any of the mfg.
bios releases. I've used it, favorably, on a few machines. It is called
Honeybios. You'll find lots of info on Google about that bios as well as
more of what I've told you But, again, keep in mind this may be a problem
you're having--esp. if you are using ANY overclock settings in bios. Not a
guess as to IF but WHEN it'll lose bios settings.
Good luck. s
