I just want an updated Outlook - my version of Office (1997, I think) is
still just fine - except I wanted a new version of Outlook. Can I download
just Outlook? Does Microsoft charge for that? Or do I need all new Office?

You can purchase Outlook as a stand alone app. And NO you cannot download it for free you need to purchase it

And the new Outlook will not work with any of your old Office programs--no
Word as editor, etc. and must be custom installed to its own Microsoft Office
2007 folder, not the default Microsoft Office folder or you will corrupt your
old Office. It would be a smart idea to completely uninstall Office 97 if you
don't use the other apps. Outlook does not come as an upgrade. It is always a
full installation. Use File, Open OL Data File in Outlook to use your old pst
file.

Actually, since Word is the only email editor for Outlook 2007, that's less of an issue than in earlier versions. Outlook has a "lite" version of Word for editor purposes; it's missing a lot of favorite Word features, though.
