Hi,
I just upgraded from 2000 to XP pro. In the process of
the upgrade I lost my dial-up networking and VPN
connections. When I tried to recreate them the option
for Dial-up and VPN was greyed out. Anyone have any
thoughts or experiences with this issue?

Thanks,

Eric

This issue usually is the result of upgrading from XP Home
to XP Pro when XP Home already had XP Service Pack 1
installed and the XP Pro CD did not include XP SP1 or a
Repair Install is run on top of an XP install with a CD that does
not include XP SP1. If the XP Pro CD that you used for the
upgrade is labeled as "Includes Service Pack 1", then that is
probably not the issue, if it does not have that on the label, then
there is a good chance that is the issue. Also be advised that by
doing that upgrade to XP Pro, you removed any 2000 Pro critical
updates and those will need to be installed again as XP Pro critical
updates. That includes the patch that dealt with the vulnerability
exploited by the msblaster worm and variants of that worm. So
before you make any connection to the Internet, make sure you
have a firewall enabled or are behind a router and then immediately
go to the Windows Update site and get all critical updates installed.

You might first check out if Remote Access Connection Manager Service
is started.

Start > Run > services.msc <Enter>

Remote Access Connection Manager should have:

Startup Type = Manual

Status = Started
