Hi, I just switched from windows 98 SE to windows XP on a new computer.
Here's my problem: On Windows XP, it's not reading several disks that
I had saved from my old computer with 98 SE, such as Quicken backup, a
lot of graphics, etc. Has anyone else had this same problem, and if so
can you please help me transfer my stuff to the computer with XP?

What types of disks - floppy, CD, other?
Also, what is the path for favorite places on XP? On 98 SE it was
c:windows\favorite places. When I paste to that path on this computer
(XP), a folder is created with fav. places, but my fav. places are NOT
stored in fav. places on the internet; the default fav. places are
there...

In XP your favorites can be found at c:\documents and
settings\<name>\Favorites

If you used packet writing software like earlier versions of Direct CD, InCD
or PacketCD etc when you burned the files to the CD-R/W then XP won't be
able to read the disks unless they were finalized. An alternative is to
upgrade your packet writing software to a version that XP can use.

First off, I'm sorry that I didn't mention it. My files and graphics, etc.
are saved to CD-RW disks. Thanks for the path on fav. places!! I now have
all of mine back in place!! :-)

Good. As sqr and Harry point out, if the CD's were written with packet
writing software (Direct CD or InCD) then you'll need to install the XP
compatible version of that software first in order to properly read the
disks.

Okay, I checked my other computer, and it uses Adaptec CD Wizard Direct CD.
I tried to close out the disks (CD-RW), but I only see options to close out
the CD-R disks. Do you know how to close out a RW disk by chance? Thank
you so much for your help! :-)

How do I install a windows XP version? I checked, and it's Adaptec Direct
CD Wizard. I found instructions to close out a CD-R disk, but not the
CD-RW, which is what I used... Thanks again for your help! :-)

What version of EZ-CD/Direct CD do you have? Direct CD is included with
Easy CD Creator. Version 5 and higher of that product are compatible with
XP, although you will need some patches from Roxio before Version 5 will
operate correctly. You can get the updates at www.roxio.com.

I'm not sure which version, but I'll check that. If I don't have version 5
or higher, am I out of luck?

I just checked my other computer, and it has HP CD
Writer 9100 with adaptec Direct CD Reader.

The versions of Direct CD that ship with Easy CD Creator lower than version
5 will not work with XP and install them will cause stability problems
including an inability to boot into Windows. Do not install Direct CD 3.x or
lower.

Checking the HP site, the software bundled with that drive for Windows 98
was Adaptec Direct CD 3 and Creator 3.5. Those versions are not
compatible with XP, nor is there any way to freely upgrade them to XP
compatible versions.

Can you create the CD's on your 98 PC using something other than Direct
CD? The software package included Easy CD Creator, use that to burn the
disks. To insure they can be read on the other computer it would be a
good idea to go ahead and close the disk once the burn is finished.

Another option would be to network the two PC's together and transfer the
files across the network.
