Just got new computer -- I prefer older version of Works!

I just got a new computer last week (hard drive broke on the old one)
and, of course, the computer came with Windows XP.

Along with XP came the perennial free software, including Works.

The problem is that the version of Works is the latest one and I am
used to and did all my previous work on the older version that came
with my old computer (in fact, I think that I'm even using a version
that came with the computer BEFORE my last one). I want to work with
the older version!

Two questions:

1) Where can I get an older version? Sure, I can buy it on ebay (but
it's hard to find!)...any other suggestions where I can go to buy it?
Can I copy it from an earlier computer and load it on to the new one
that I have or is that not allowed? Can I get it from the recovery
disk that came with the old computer?

2) Another problem: I'm not 100% sure what the number of the earlier
version of Works that I did all my files on is....I think it is 4.0. I
have the files of course...is there any way of identifying the version
of Works that they were done on so that I can know which version to buy
(yes, I intend to load the OLD version on my new computer and NOT use
the later version!)?

I thank you in advance to your answers to my queries...

Microsoft Works Suite has never come with any operating system.
Many computer sellers choose to bundle Works and/or other programs with
their computers.
You would probably have to get the version number off the old CD.
More information is probably available in the Works newsgroup:
microsoft.public.works.win

Ebay is probably the best source, but BUYER BEWARE.
Try local computer stores, they may have outdated software available for
cheaper prices.

You should consider learning the new version.
Depending on the age, the old may be unsupported or at least unsupported
sooner than the new version.
Once it is unsupported, there may be no fixes security or otherwise made
available.
The older it gets, the more likely you will have compatibility issues with
others when sharing files.

Microsoft no longer sells, distributes or supports Works v4.
It would behoove you to take a little time to learn how to
use the latest version of Microsoft Works.

Some older versions of apps are still supported by XP and some are
not. To find out, try installing it, if it is not supported you may get an
error message. Some vendors have provided updates to be able to
run under XP, check it out. One suggestion, try the new version and
get used to it. I liked Windows 3.1 but I am not going back to it.
Also, you can try the Compatibility Mode:
Start>All Programs>Accessories>Programs Compatibility Wizard

My recommendation is to take the trouble to learn the new version you
already have. In most instances, it takes very little effort, and in a short
time you'll be comfortable with the new version, and probably even prefer
it..

However if you insist on an old version, read on.

eBay is probably your best choice. But you can do a google search for the
particular version you want.

The recovery disk presumably has only the operating system on it, but you
can look at it and see. If it's not there, it should be on some other CD you
got with the computer.

Do you still have the old computer? Start Works on it, then click Help |
About.. It should display version info there.
