I just bought new HP Pavilion and I am still new to Windows XP. When I
click CTRL+ALT+DELTE it gives me a list of currently running
applications. One of them is HP updates, another one is Kodak updates
and some other ones. I do not think I need them to be running or do I?
how do you decide what to disable, or maybe I do not need to?

Thanks, Boy.

Alt+Ctrl+Del will shut it down for that boot, when you reboot though it all
start again.

To stop stuff from booting up every time first you can go to Start,
Programs, Startup and delete what's in there. Then you can click Start,
choose Run, type in "msconfig" and choose the "Startup" tab and uncheck
whatever you don't want starting up.

The site below lists pretty much every process and will tell you what it is
and if you can disable it or not:

Thank you Smith,

If I uncheck applications at Startup, for example Kodak, will I be able
to connect to it if I need to download pictures from my camera?

If I disable some programs and later want to use them - can I enable
them again?

Thanks, Boy.

Yeah, stuff like Printers and Cameras don't need to start up at every boot.
I disabled my camera, I don't want the software running when the thing isn't
even attached to the computer you know? When I hook the camera to the
computer though, my program detects the camera is attached and starts itself
up. Same with my printer, if I'm not printing I don't want something
running in the background monitoring my printer, but when I click print it
starts. And yes, if at any time in the future you want to re-enable them at
boot up you can just go back in there and click the box again. Even though
you uncheck it, the program will still be on the msconfig startup list.
