Will,
it was best to upgrade the bios before installing XP, or after...<<
after ...
.... IMHO there are lots of others updates to be done before updating the
BIOS, e.g.:
- reading last infos about your mobo on the Asus Web site;
http://usa.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?langs=09&m=A7N8X
- see your mobo User Manual if there are some utilities to be installed
BEFORE the Operating System, XP in your case, but normaly the OS must be
installed first and just after ...
- ... install utilities from the Asus Mobo CD, before doing so, would be
best to check if there are more recent download available on the Asus Web
pages;
http://usa.asus.com/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=A7N8X
and/or
http://www.asus.com/
- could be also a good idea to look and see if updating from other sources
than ASUS would be best (e.g. from Nvidia, Gigabyte, etc.)...
- at this point, security Software (e.g. anti-viral, firewall, etc.) should
be installed as well as Windows XP patches and all XP drivers needed...
- sharing infos with others ASUS mobo's users is also a good idea to known
what utilities version are best or not;

Finaly you may updating the BIOS if needed.
Of course this is just my point of view, hope it could help
