Can anyone tell me whether
system32\DRIVERS\jupiter.sys is a legitimate file
on a Win2K system?

I've tried a google search and a search at
microsoft support but can't dig up any info.

There's no such file on my system. If you right-click on it and click
Properties, is there a Version tab? If not, it's probably not legitimate.
If it's there, the Version tab should tell you where the file came from.

Yes, there is a version tab. It's described as a
USB Security Device Drive from Prolific
Technology. I think it's probably associated with
a flash-drive that I once had with a security feature.

I was worried because, iirc, there is/was an
extremely vicious, browser hijack that was
targetted at a site called jupiter.com I think. I
thought it might be associated with that - but I
have no other problem in that respect anyway.

Thanks for the help!
