I have experience with configuring external email accounts. On a recent
account addition I find that email marked as Junk was not removed from the
inbox but modified to show the headers. Not sure how it can get it to move
to the junk folder and remember emails for the future. Advice sought

Not a clear description of the problem, at least to me. You don't even
mention your Outlook version, for example, or what type of account you're
using.

Apologies... realized some things after I sent it. I have Office XP pro on
the machine in question. The email account is a web-based one with an IMAP
configuration. Windows XP Pro SP2 is the OS. Instead of moving emails that
I have determined to be junk [right click to select the junk email option]
they remain in the inbox only now with the first few lines of text. Again,
much thanks for your attention

Have you selected the send/receive options to download full messages and not
just the headers?
