Sabo, Eric

We are in the middle of our deployment of outlook 2003. We are having
some problems with the junk email filter. We are having problems when
adding certain domains into the blocked sender list. What are the correct
steps to add domains to the blocked sender list? Most workstations are
Windows XP SP1 with the 832333 patched applied. I would be willing to
give the internet headers to PSS for further review.

Dear Eric,

Thanks for posting here.

I assume you use the Outlook with the Exchange server in your environment.
For this scenario, I would like to suggest you set the black list on the
Exchange server so that you do not need to set the black list on each
Outlook client also the spam can be blocked by the Exchange server before
they arrive at the user's mailboxes. To do this, please refer the following
steps:

1. Open "Exchange System Manager". Expand "Global Settings"

2. Right-click "Message Delivery", click "Properties".

3. Click "Sender filtering" and you may add the blocked senders into this
list.

Also, please refer the following documents to improve the Mail system
security:

and Filter Unsolicited E-mail Messages in Exchange Server 2003

I hope the above information helps.
If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know.

Have a nice day!

Jorge,
I would rather the client do it, because I don't want to be in the
business of retrieving email for everyone besides there are some great third
party products out there.

No one seems to be able to give me any answers to why the junk email
filter on Outlook 2003 doesn't block domains - I have posted this same
question about one month ago on the newsgroups. If you could I would like
information related to this. Is Microsoft committed to making this filter
better? The reason we decide to rollout Outlook 2003 was just because of
this feature. Now we are finding out that the junk email filter catches
only about 50% of the email that it should.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the update.

You may use the Outlook junk mail function to block the spam.

1. Open Outlook 2003. Click "Actions"-->"Junk E-mail"-->"Junk E-mail
Options"

2. In the Option tab, I suggest you select "High". This option can help you
to filter most junk mails.

3. Click "Blocked senders", click "add" to add the domains to the black
list. Also you may export the list to a .txt file and then import the .txt
file to the other Outlook clients.

I hope the above information helps.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to let me know.

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Jorge Fei

Jorge,
I have my email filter set to "High".

I am trying to block certain domains. But the email still goes to my
inbox instead of the junk mail folder. I did install the Outlook Filter
Updated (832333), my build of outlook is 11.5608.5703.

Dear Sabo,

Thanks for the update.

Based on my research, you may add the domains to the "Blocked Senders" list
as I said in last post. However, if your Outlook is *not* running in
"Exchange Cache mode" or the domain which you want to be blocked is your
own domain, the junk mail filter function will not work.

I hope the above information helps.
If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know.

Have a nice weekend!

Jorge Fei

Jorge,
My outlook is definitely running in Exchange cache mode. It is
catching some domains that I have on my blocked senders list but there are
about 10 domains that it is not catching.

Hi Sabo,

Thanks for the update.
Would you please tell me does this problem occur on each Outlook XP client?
I would like to suggest you delete these catching domains and then try
again. Also, please provide me with the domain names that you cannot block,
maybe we can help you to correct the configurations.

Have a nice day!

Jorge Fei
