There are two things involved here. One is the grid and the other is whether
Word is snapping to it. I'm not convinced either of these is actually
relevant, but some users have reported that the following helps: Display the
Drawing toolbar and choose Draw | Grid. Make sure that the grid interval is
set to something in inches and not cm or whatever and that "Snap to grid" is
not checked. If this doesn't help, keep in mind that you can set tabs to
specific locations, by clicking and then dragging while holding Alt, which
overrides the grid and the built-in detents and also displays the
measurement.

I am trying to set the tab stops on the horizontal ruler in word, but
every time I do this the stop goes to an uneven measurment. Example: 1.04",
2.08", 1.56", when I really want 1", 2", 1.5" etc. I have to go into the
menu now and edit the numbers to get them to be exact. This function used
to work properly without using the menu (stops would jump every 1/16") and
when I open old documents it still works. How do I change the preferences
back so this will work again?
