Judder on timeline

I use a Canon S2IS digi camera in movie mode. It records DV at 30 fps. It
outputs this in AVI format which plays fine, without any hint of judder, on
Media Player 9, Movie Maker (after importing it), on my Windows XP PC (2.7
Ghz, 512 RAM etc).
However when I drag the AVI file into the Timeline of Movie Maker, or
Cyberlink Power Director, the file plays with severe judder, as if the camera
was being jerked during recording. This is before I do any editing, or
conversion to MPEG or anything - just playing it from the Timeline.
ie. The imported file plays fine but not from the Timeline.
I guess the problem may be something to do with change of frame rate to 24
fps, although with Power Director it still jerks even if I've set the
Preferences to 30 fps.
Any ideas on how I might fix this? Or what's happening?

Canon S2 IS .avi files (30 fps) should play
in Movie Maker.

Are you running WinXP SP2?

Might be worth a try to reduce your Graphics
Hardware Acceleration and if an improvement
is realized...it's a strong indication that you
need to update your video driver.

Thanks John
Yes XP SP2 and Radeon 9550 graphics, latest drivers.
Hardware deceleration makes no difference. The files certainly play OK with
no judder when imported but not when played from the timeline. I can go back
to the avi import which will play fine again. Seems the mere act of dragging
to the timeline affects the compatibility in some mysterious way. The same
happens in Cyberlink Power Director 4 (latest version).
Any more ideas??

Sorry, maybe someone else will offer a solution.

MM on the timleine only offers a preview quality, of low resolution adn
every other frame generally. The lower the hardware specs the worse this
gets. Also it plays it in real time, so the more efects etc you add the
worse it becomes.
Save the movie as a dv-avi and then play it in WMP to test if it plays ok.
If so it is just this.
