Everytime I try to look at a jpg. picture it is distorded,
like looking at a picture with only 16 colors, tryed
changing video cards and it didn't help. Wiped the hard
drive and reinstalled windows XP and the same problem. Am
runing a ECS MoBo with 512 DDR ram, 80 gig Maxtor HD, Heck
even the XP activation screen is distorded.

Any help would be apprecated.

Might be worth trying a different monitor. Have
you tried reseating the monitor plug?

Hi there,

You do not say what colour depth the graphics card is set too.

Right click anywhere on the desktop and select Appearance and then Settings,
The dialogue box will give you (should) all available options for your graphics
card.

You should note that a "feature" of some graphics cards, mostly old ones, is
that the higher the resolution the less colour depth available...so if the
dialogue box tells you that you can only view 4 bit (16 colours) then you may
need to reduce the resolution (how many pixels height by width). doing this may
increase the available colour depth. If it remains at 165 colours then you have
a problem with the graphics card.

Hi John, Sorry but that is not the problem, I've got a 128
MB Radion ATI 9700 card, have set it to 32, 24, 16 all
with the same results, then I changed the card and put
other graphics cards into the machine, 32 MB PCI 16 Mb
PCI, 64 MB AGP and so on always with the same thing. I
even wiped out the hard drive and put XP back in with no
other programs running. Oh one other thing I'm running COX
high speed internet. Is it just me or what, I can't seem
to find any others with the same problem.

If you can think of anything
else, my e-mail address is

Wild guess alert! In the video adapter settings, make sure that
anything having to do with Screen Expansion is unchecked, and the
correct default monitor is selected. Then adjust the monitor for
correct screen dimensions. Othewise, can you put a couple of screen
captures to a web site? It might help with diagnosis.
