jpg Doesn't Show In Powerpoint

A strange one:
jpg's from a Nikon D50 imported as jpg's onto a XP Pro Sony laptop - show
fine in Explorer, will open up when double clicked - work fine in PowerPoint
2000 on the this Sony - transferred to a USB drive - when imported into
PowerPoint 2000 on a W2K box, only some of the jpg's show up in the
presentation, for the others, only the placeholder appears. I thought it was
a conflict on this particular W2K PC (having it re-imaged), but then the
same thing popped up on a user's personal XP laptop. They imported the same
set of pictures from the USB drive and they have same issue with displaying
them in PowerPoint 2000. This has happened with two completely different
sets of imported pictures now.

Sounds like the jpgs have had quite a few stops along the way.
We'd need to sort out where they too the wrong turn.

Imported how? Copied directly from the D50 or its CF card to the laptop
(essentially treating the card or camera as a hard drive), or using some kind
of intermediate software? If the latter, try eliminating the software.

Files exported directy from the D50 over a USB cable as jpgs via the Nikon
software onto a Sony XP Pro laptop. Once they are on the Sony laptop, they
behave as you would expect. They can viewed, added to a PowerPoint slide
through the "Insert -> Picture -> From File" method. They behave normally on
4 other W2K PC's that I've tried.

They are added to the presentation through the "Insert -> Picture -> From
File" method. This works as expected on the Sony and the 4 other W2K PC's.

Once the files are exported from the camera, the files are copied from the
Sony laptop onto a USB stick. That stick is plugged into the other user's
laptop (Dell XP Pro). They use the same "Insert -> Picture -> From File"
method, in fact, the same person is doing it on both machines. On the Dell
laptop, the jpg's thumbnails don't display either.

I'm going to try and get a hold of the camera and examine the settings...

Thanks for the add'l details, Dave.

First, I'd get the Nikon software out of the mix (not that I've any reason to
mistrust it, but it's a variable that's easy to eliminate).

I'd try using a card-reader to move the JPGs from the camera's CF card to a PC.
If a card reader isn't available, I'm pretty sure there's a menu option on that
camera that lets you treat the camera as an external hard drive; you could then
plug it into the computer via USB cable and copy the images directly to the
computer's hard drive.

Either way, move the images to one of the PCs that's giving trouble and try
inserting the photos into PPT.

To eliminate one more potential trouble spot, copy the photos from the USB device
onto the target PC's hard drive and insert the photos from the hard drive.

If that doesn't do it, a couple other ideas:

Use something like IrfanView (free: www.irfanview.com) or any other image editing
program to batch convert a set of JPGs to PNG, or even to downsample them and save
back to JPG. Try importing the converted files on the problem PC.

Finally, there could be a video display issue on the problem PC. Try setting
hardware acceleration back:

I have the exact same issue. Nikkon D50. Trying to make a slideshow in
Powerpoint, and the jpgs brought into powerpoint from my hard drive will not
show.

I've inserted other photos from a CD Rom drive (photos by others) and have
no problem.

Any suggestions??

It's not clear whether you've tried the suggestions I've already made.

FWIW, photos from the D70 work fine.
